Yard management, dock appointment scheduling and fulfilment orchestration — the operational layer between the transportation plan and what actually happens at your sites.

Transportation management plans the freight. Warehouse management handles what happens inside the four walls. Between them sits a gap that costs many operations more than either — the yard, the dock, and the sequence in which trucks arrive, wait, load and leave.

This is the layer our Logistics Management Solutions practice covers. It is where a well-planned load still turns into a three-hour detention charge, and where relatively modest changes produce unusually visible savings.

Yard management

Most yards run on a whiteboard, a spreadsheet, and one person who knows where everything is. That works until the volume rises, that person takes leave, or a customer asks why a trailer sat for two days.

Yard management on SAP gives you the trailer inventory, its status, its contents and its dwell time as system data rather than tribal knowledge. What that enables in practice:

  • Check-in and check-out recorded against the transportation document, so arrival and departure times are defensible when a detention charge is disputed.
  • Trailer and container inventory by location, status and contents — including which are loaded, empty, or awaiting inspection.
  • Yard moves planned and assigned to shunters rather than radioed ad hoc.
  • Dwell time reporting that shows where trailers actually sit and for how long — usually the first analysis that pays for the project.
  • Gate integration with barriers, weighbridges or licence-plate recognition where the site volume justifies it.

Dock appointment scheduling

Uncontrolled arrivals produce a predictable pattern: a queue at 7am, idle docks at 2pm, drivers waiting, detention charges, and a receiving team whose workload has nothing to do with how much labour is rostered.

Appointment scheduling replaces that with a booked slot per load. The design questions that determine whether it works:

  • Who books — you or the carrier? Carrier self-service scales better but needs a portal and rules. Internal booking gives you control but adds workload.
  • How long is a slot? A fixed duration is simple and often wrong. Slot length driven by load type, pallet count or handling requirement is more accurate and harder to configure.
  • What happens when a carrier is late? Automatic reassignment, a grace period, or a manual decision — decide before go-live, not during the first busy week.
  • Which docks can take which loads? Dock capability constraints — temperature, height, equipment — must be modelled or the schedule will produce assignments the yard cannot honour.

Done properly, the measurable outcomes are shorter driver wait times, lower detention spend, flatter labour demand across the day, and a receiving team that knows what is arriving tomorrow.

Inbound and outbound orchestration

Orchestration is the sequencing layer: given everything that could be received or dispatched today, what should happen in what order, and what does that imply for labour, docks and yard moves?

The work involves connecting the transportation plan to the site's actual constraints — dock capacity, shift patterns, equipment availability, production demand for inbound components — so that the plan is executable rather than theoretical. Where SAP EWM is in scope, this extends into wave planning and loading sequence.

Freight cost management and allocation

Freight is one of the largest costs many businesses cannot attribute accurately. It arrives as a carrier invoice covering multiple orders, customers and products, and lands in a single cost centre because splitting it is difficult.

Proper allocation changes commercial decisions. When freight cost is attributed to the order, the customer and the product, it becomes possible to see which customers are unprofitable once delivery is included, which lanes are worth renegotiating, and which small orders cost more to ship than they earn.

We implement allocation rules that distribute freight cost by weight, volume, value or a defined split, reconcile carrier invoices against expected charges, and post accruals so period-end reflects freight that has been incurred but not yet billed. Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as SAP Yard Logistics?

SAP Yard Logistics is one of the components we use to deliver this practice area, and Dock Appointment Scheduling is part of it. "Logistics Management Solutions" is how we describe the broader capability area, which also covers inbound and outbound orchestration, fulfilment and freight cost allocation, and typically involves SAP Transportation Management, Extended Warehouse Management and S/4HANA alongside it. Do we need SAP EWM for yard and dock management?

Not necessarily. Yard management and appointment scheduling can be implemented against S/4HANA and Transportation Management without a full EWM footprint. EWM becomes relevant when you need the yard and dock schedule tightly coupled to warehouse execution — wave planning, loading sequence, and labour management inside the building. If your warehouse runs on inventory management rather than EWM, we would scope the yard work to fit that.

What kind of return should we expect from dock scheduling?

The savings that are easiest to verify are reduced detention and demurrage charges, and reduced overtime in receiving caused by arrival clustering. Both are measurable from your existing invoices and payroll data, which is why we suggest baselining them before the project rather than after. Softer benefits — better carrier relationships, more predictable labour planning — are real but harder to attribute, so we would not build a business case on them alone.

Can we start with just yard management and add the rest later?

Yes, and for many sites that is the sensible sequence. Yard visibility is self-contained, delivers a quick dwell-time analysis that often justifies the next phase, and does not require carriers to change anything. Appointment scheduling is the natural second step because it depends on carrier cooperation, and orchestration usually follows once both are stable.
